What We Are

UMSA (United Marine Suppliers Association) is an organization of marine suppliers, which are approved suppliers to the boat-builder Members of United Marine Manufacturers Association (UMMA) and the Dealer Members of United Marine Retailers Association (UMRA). UMSA strives to build a cooperative business partnership between its Members and the UMMA builders and the UMRA marine retailers. Just as UMMA is an advocate organization for the boat builders and UMRA is an advocate for its dealers, UMSA is an advocate for the suppliers in order to enhance their collective ability to address the industry issues, which effect their survival and continued prosperity.

Industry Position

The marine industry has changed dramatically since the consolidation of boat building by power providers began in 1986. Since that time, conglomerates with direct or indirect ties to marine power production have secured control of more than fifty percent of the total domestic recreational boat building market. This has resulted in a challenging position for the industry's suppliers as well as the remaining independent builders. For the builders, It would be similar to Chrysler having to buy engines and transmissions from Ford and Chevy. For the suppliers, as the number of viable builders is reduced, so to are the options to sell their products. Likewise, as more and more control is vested in fewer and fewer boat builders, the competition for the remaining business grows stronger and the opportunity for profitable business is diminished. In supporting the UMMA boat builders, UMSA Members help to slow and/or reverse this trend.

Founding in 1998, UMSA has grown to become the largest dedicated organization of marine suppliers in the marine industry and is increasingly becoming a voice for their interests. In total, more than one-hundred-and-thirty supplier and factory representative Member companies provide a full range of hardware, construction materials, power, and services to UMMA boat-builders and UMRA dealers.
At the same time, by working together, UMSA has helped UMMA to grow into the largest organization of boat-builders in the marine industry. By pooling resources between the three organizations, independent builders, suppliers, and dealers have all learned the benefits of shared success.
